Half-way up the mountain a large cornice has released and a massive avalanche of tumbling snow is building relentlessly through the scene. Specks of blue sky and sun are still visible, but shadow and darkness begin to descend over the scene as the avalanche builds in ferocity. A small group of winter birds can be seen in the foreground beginning to take flight to escape the oncoming path of wreckage. The work is unsigned. It is an exceptional masterpiece.
