She was spare, gaunt and elegant. Her face was long and pale, her eyes were pale, small and close beside her long nose; she had prominent front teeth; her hair was an unruly shock of white tufts. She habitually wore a tight and threadbare suit of black twill with black stockings and black shoes, in unkind contrast to her pale skin and white hair. Her arms and legs were lank. She projected unfilled love promises and a love of the past.
